New to flight training?

Getting Started: Private Pilot

Learning to fly? One of the first steps is to gather the books and resources you'll need through your Private Pilot training. Here's what we recommend & require for training with Ultimate Aviation. (*Denotes required material)

ASA Complete Private Pilot Kit (Part 61)

Bundle & save when you buy the complete kit, which also includes your first flight bag. The kit includes these required items: FAR/AIM, Oral Exam Guide, ACS, plotter, E6B, logbook, Written Test Prep workbook, syllabus. It also includes supplemental items you'll find helpful during training.

ASA 2026 FAR/AIM*

Federal Aviation Regulations & Aeronautical Information Manual. We prefer your personal copy be purchased before Lesson 1 & brought to every flight/ground lesson. *Required before Lesson 1

Airman Certification Standards: Private Pilot*

This book outlines the knowledge, risk management, and skill elements you'll be tested on during your checkride. We will refer to this book often during training. Bring to every lesson. *Required before Lesson 1

ASA Private Pilot Test Prep workbook*

You'll work through this book along with your online ground school in preparation for the FAA knowledge exam. Also includes the same testing supplement you'll use in the testing center. *Required when you begin your online ground school

Sporty's Private Pilot Syllabus (Purchase Option)*

OPTION 1: PURCHASE A HARD COPY. We utilize the this syllabus as a structure for lessons. A hard copy, whether pre-printed or downloaded and printed is required. *Required before Lesson 1

Sporty's Private Pilot Syllabus (Free PDF Option)*

OPTION 2: FREE PDF & PRINT AT HOME. We utilize the this syllabus as a structure for lessons. A hard copy, whether pre-printed or downloaded and printed is required. *Required before Lesson 1 *Note: It's typically more cost-effective to purchase the hard copy.

ASA Oral Exam Guide*

This is one of the best preparation books for your first checkride. *Required after 1st solo, or after passing the FAA knowledge exam

Rotating Plotter*

You'll need a plotter for cross country flight planning. *Required for navigation section of ground school, FAA knowledge exam, and cross-country flight planning

E6B Flight Computer*

A flight computer is required for the navigation section of your ground school and FAA test, as well as cross-country flight planning. A manual E6B is the minimum requirement, however Sproty's Electronic E6B or ASA CX-3 Flight Computer are highly recommended for the FAA test. *Required for navigation section of ground school, FAA knowledge exam, and cross-country flight planning

Pilot Logbook*

Every pilot needs a logbook! Either provide your own, or use this link to purchase one. Bring your logbook to every flight/ground lesson. *Required before Lesson 1

ForeFlight

ForeFlight is the gold standard for electronic flight bags. It's a one-stop app for flight planning, weather briefing, performance calculations, and more. ForeFlight is not a requirement for Private Pilot training, but we will show you some of the capabilities during training. ForeFlight is required for IFR training.

FAA Publications

Hard copies are not required, but sometimes preferred. At minimum, have access to the Airplane Flying Handbook and Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK). These are free downloads at FAA.gov. Also recommend: Aeronautical Chart User's Guide, Aviation Weather Handbook, Risk Management Handbook.

Headset

Every pilot needs a headset, and there are many styles to choose from. Click the link for a reliable, budget headset from Kore Aviation. For higher end headsets, check out Lightspeed and Bose Aviation headsets. A basic headset can be provided, but we urge you to purchase your own during your training. *Follow the link and use the coupon code ULTIMATEAVIATION to get 15% off a Kore Aviation headset!

Kneeboard*

A kneeboard is required to help keep important information organized. A basic VFR kneeboard is a good start because it contains some great quick reference info. A simple, mini clipboard works, too. *Required by Lesson 5

VFR Sectional Charts*

A paper copy of the VFR sectional chart (Kansas City) will be required for cross country planning and your checkride. If you aren't using ForeFlight, you will need one before your 1st solo flight. A chart for Memphis may also be required for your checkride. *Required before 1st solo

View Limiting Device

A pair of foggles or hood will be used for a minimum of 3 hours in training. A pair can be provided, but you may purchase your personal set.

Flashlight*

A small flashlight with both white and red lights are required for night flying. A headlamp with white and red lights is also highly recommended. *Required before night lessons

VSL Ace Guide

This is a great resource to have available during your studies. It's especially a useful tool to take into any checkride. Not required, but highly recommended!
